Tetragami Creative Design System
Where did Tetragami come from?
- Inventor: Peter Hubbard, retired Seattle elementary teacher
- Grew out of math instruction: Mr. Hubbard's Happy Hexagons
- 3-D Building as the instructional goal: Developing Spatial Intelligence
Examples of Tetragami as STEAM Curriculum
1. Science
- Tetrahedrons/Hexagons/Octahedrons/Icosahedrons/Dodecahedron in Nature (water, carbon, methane, honeycombs, snowflakes, atoms, viruses)
- Here are some articles related to hexagons and graphene!

2. Technology
- Mars Rovers "Opportunity" and "Spirit", Graphene/Nanotubes/Buckeyballs Materials Revolution (solar panels, super computers, desalinization, electric cars)
3. Engineering
- Open-ended structured 3-D design platform
4. Art
- Shape/Color/Imagination/Discovery
5. Math
- Philosophy (symmetry and platonic solids)
How to incorporate Tetragami into your classroom/school?
- As free choice activity center in classroom
- As ongoing team building activity with curriculum connections
- As student led club during the school day (maker space)
- As teacher (parent) led after school program
Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards Connections
Standards for Mathematical Practices
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP4 Model with mathematics.
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP7 Look for and make use of structure.
Next Generation Science Standards
5-PS1-1 Develop a model to describe that matter is made of particles too small to be seen.
MS-PS1-1Develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and extended structures.
HS-ETS1-2 Design a solution to a complex real-world problem by breaking it down into smaller, more manageable problems that can be solved through engineering.
HS-LS2-5 Develop a model to illustrate the role of photosynthesis and cellular respiration in the cycling of carbon among the biosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and geosphere.
